Vikings fall at Elmhurst after late Blue Jay surge

Despite a five-goal lead early in the fourth quarter, the Augustana men's lacrosse team lost to Elmhurst in overtime 14-13 on Wednesday, April 23rd in Elmhurst, Illinois.  The loss moved the Vikings to 9-5 overall and 6-3 in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference, while the Blue Jays improved to 8-8 on the season and 5-5 in league play.
 
Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) scored his fifth goal of the game to put the visitors up 11-6 with 14:07 remaining in the contest but Elmhurst answered with two goals before Jesse Nagelberg (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) found the back of the net with 9:28 to go. Down 12-8, the Blue Jays retaliated with a pair of goals to pull within two with 5:53 remaining. Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) tallied his 31st score of the season to give the Vikings a 13-10 advantage with 4:44 left.
 
Augustana held off the Elmhurst attack until the :57 mark when the Blue Jays pulled within two. Just 17 seconds later the hosts scored again to make the score 13-12 and with eight seconds remaining in regulation an unassisted Elmhurst goal evened the score at 13-13.
 
Head coach Kyle Hart's crew was unable to get a shot off in the overtime period and gave up a costly turnover that led to the Elmhurst goal 1:33 into overtime. The Blue Jays capitalized on their only shot in the extra period.
 
Davis led the Augustana attack with five goals accompanied by an assist. Gleason put away three scores in addition to an assist as well. Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) tallied three goals and his teammate Nagelberg added a pair.
 
Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) had a team-high two assists in the contest whereas Nagelberg, Jeremy Gottardo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.), and Colin Haley (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) each added one.
 
The Vikings were outshot by a 36-26 margin despite the 16-15 halftime tally. Ground balls in the contest were even at 35 for each unit with Ryan Nakamoto (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Cody Burgdorff (Peak-to-Peak HS, Lafayette, Colo.) each collecting five. Augustana was on the wrong end of the 13-31 faceoff statistic as Nakamoto won nine while Jerrell Collymore (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) succeeded three times and Connor Zinn (Heritage HS, Littleton, Colo.) won his lone faceoff.
 
Hart's crew went 16-17 on clear attempts opposed to 10-13 by Elmhurst. The Vikings also took advantage of a pair of extra-man opportunities whereas the Blue Jays were only 1-3 on the power play.
 
Burgdorff played all 61:33 in the net for Augustana and recorded six of the game's 11 saves. The sophomore goalkeeper is now 9-5 on the season and has a save percentage of 52.9% along with a goals against average of 9.32.
 
On Saturday, April 26th Augustana will celebrate "Senior Day" as it plays its last regular season contest. The Vikings are scheduled to host Aurora for a 1:00 p.m. start. The Augustana program is 0-2 in the all-time series with Aurora. The Spartans are currently 12-3 and 9-0 in the league.
