Sophomore attacker Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) was instrumental in the Augustana men's lacrosse team's 19-5 win at Fontbonne on Saturday, April 19, 2014. The Vikings moved to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference with the victory while the Griffins fell to 2-12 on the season and 1-7 in league play.

Gleason netted a single-game record eight goals in St. Louis and added two assists to tie Andrew Miller's (Waukesha North HS, Waukesha, Wis.) single-game point record of 10 set in the Vikings' March 12th win over Dubuque. Just 47 seconds into the contest, Gleason's tirade began to give the Vikings' a 1-0 lead. A couple minutes later Gleason assisted an Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) goal 23 seconds before Fontbonne tallied its first to make the score 2-1.

Head coach Kyle Hart's squad scored four more goals, including a pair by Gleason to close out the opening period. Fontbonne struck first in the second quarter to pull within four at 6-2 but Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) and Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) each netted a goal to push the blue and gold lead to six with 11:20 remaining before the intermission. Gleason scored the next three goals for the Vikings, all of which were assisted by Davis to head into the second half with an 11-2 lead.

Gleason's streak was not over yet as he netted another goal just 37 seconds into the half for his seventh tally of the afternoon. The Griffins scored half a minute later to cut the visitor's lead to single digits. Four more third quarter goals, including Gleason's record-setting eighth tally gave Augustana a 16-3 lead entering the final stanza.

Augustana outscored the hosts by a 3-2 margin over the final 15 minutes for the final 19-5 mark. Miller and Kyle Doner (Peak-to-Peak HS, Erie, Colo.) recorded the final three scores with Doner registering the final two.

To go along with eight Gleason goals, Davis and Hawkins each scored a trio while Doner finished with a pair. Colin Haley (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.), Crescenti, and Miller all scored a goal for Hart's squad. Davis had a game-high three assists for the visitors whereas Gleason, Haley, and Jesse Nagelberg (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) all had a couple. Doner, Hawkins, and Chris Hager (Exetor Academy, Newfields, N.H.) each registered an assist in the contest.

Austin Marrison (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) picked up a game-high six of the Vikings' 38 ground balls while the Griffins gathered 20 in the contest. Ryan Nakamoto (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) went 15-22 on face-offs for the day as Augustana finished the contest winning 20 of the 28 face-offs. Connor Zinn (Heritage HS, Littleton, Colo.) was 3-4 in face-offs while Jerrell Collymore (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) went 2-2 on the day.

Brady Welvaert (Holmen HS, Holmen, Wis.) led the Vikings with three of the 11 caused turnovers. Fontbonne caused just four Augustana turnovers in the MLC contest. Offensively, Hart's crew outshot the hosts by a lopsided 65-32 mark.

Fontbonne recorded 24 saves on the afternoon while Cody Burgdorff (Peak-to-Peak HS, Lafayette, Colo.), Jon Pape (Hoffman Estates HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.), and Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) combined for 10. Burgdorff was credited with the win allowing just two goals and recording four saves in the first half of play. Peters also allowed two goals in addition to a save in just under 20 minutes of work while Pape forfeited just one score and recorded five saves in the span of 10 minutes.

Augustana travels to Elmhurst on Wednesday, April 23rd for a 7:00 p.m. MLC match-up. The Blue Jays are currently 6-8 with a 4-5 record in the league. Hart's crew won the only meeting between the two programs by a 14-2 tally during the 2013 campaign.
