Jonathan Bryk (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) tallied his third goal of the season with 9:14 remaining in the opening quarter to give Augustana a 2-1 lead that it would not relinquish as the Vikings men's lacrosse team visited Benedictine on Saturday, April 5th. Augustana moved to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in Midwest Lacrosse Conference play following the 12-5 victory at Benedictine. Four of head coach Kyle Hart's team's last five wins have come on the road.

The Vikings scored three goals in each quarter, while allowing just one goal in the final three quarters following a two-goal opening period by the Eagles. Sophomore Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) led the Viking offense with five goals while Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) netted three. Jesse Nagelberg (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) found the back of the net twice and added an assist. Colin Haley (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and Bryk each added a goal for the blue and goal. Vincent Giglierano (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) added an assist while Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) assisted on two of Gleason's goals.

Augustana held a 3-2 advantage after the first period and entered halftime with a 6-3 lead following two late Crescenti scores in the second quarter. Gleason scored goals at the 8:15 and 7:52 marks in the third stanza to give Hart's crew an 8-4 lead. Benedictine found the net with 6:24 to go in the period to pull within four but Haley scored his fifth of the season to put the visitors back up five. Crescenti scored two more consecutive goals to start the fourth quarter for an 11-4 margin. Benedictine tallied its fifth goal on the afternoon with 6:05 remaining before Gleason would have the final say at the 1:29 mark.

Haley gathered six of the Vikings' 44 ground balls in the contest while the Eagles were held to just 27. Augustana outshot the hosts by a 49-30 margin. Taylor McGinnis (New Trier HS, Kenilworth, Ill.) caused three of the 20 Benedictine turnovers on the afternoon while the Vikings only gave the ball up 13 times.

In the net Cody Burgdorff (Peak-to-Peak HS, Lafayette, Colo.) sealed the victory with 11 saves and only five goals allowed in the conference match-up. Burgdorff's Benedictine counterpart registered 15 saves on the afternoon while allowing 12 goals.

Benedictine moved to 3-2 in league play and 7-4 overall with the loss.

Hanover is up next for the Hart's team. The MLC contest is scheduled for Saturday, April 12th at Thorson-Lucken Field with a 12:00 p.m. start time. The Panthers are currently 9-3 and 5-2 in the MLC and are scheduled to visit Transylvania before the match-up in Rock Island.  Augustana holds a 2-0 all-time series advantage over Hanover with a 14-5 win in 2013 and an 8-6 victory in 2012.
