Spartans beat Augustana 12-11 to clinch MLC Championship

Box Score Traveling to Augustana College, the Aurora University men's lacrosse team defeated the host Vikings 12-11 and clinched the 2014 Midwest Lacrosse Conference Championship in the process.

AU got out to a quick 1-0 lead courtesy of a Max Obriecht goal 46 seconds into the game. The teams then traded goals for the remainder of the first quarter with Nolan Miller scoring and Obriecht adding two more. At the end of one, AU trailed 5-4.

In the second quarter, freshman Jason Koziol took over. He would score four times to give AU a 8-5 lead going into the halftime intermission. Koziol was assisted by Zachary OIsen, Miller and Alex Gebben on three of his four goals.

In the third quarter the Spartans continued to build on their lead. Jordan Williams scored one minute in with an assist from Koziol. Only seven seconds later Obriecht scored his fourth of the game as AU now led 10-5.

After a Viking goal, AU scored two more times with Kyle Frazier scoring with an assist from Obreicht and Koziol scoring a man-up goal with 2:38 to play int he third off an assist from Williams. After the fifth Koziol goal, AU led 12-6.

Augustana scored once right before the third quarter ended and then added four goals in the fourth. The final two being man-up goals and brought the AU lead down to one at 12-11 with 53 seconds to play.

Obriecht won the final face off and the Spartans were able to run out the clock to seal the win.

With the win, AU is now 13-3 overall and 10-0 in the MLC. Next action for the Spartan men's lacrosse team comes on Wednesday, April 30 when they host Augustana College in the MLC Tournament. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. on Vago Field in Aurora, Ill.
