CONWAY, Ark. – Junior goalkeeper Cody Burgdorff (Peak to Peak HS, Lafayette, Colo.) stopped 16 of the 18 shots he faced in 55 minutes of action Wednesday as Augustana opened the 2014 men's lacrosse season with a 17-3 win at Hendrix. Ten different Vikings scored, including six players who had multiple goals, led by sophomore Alexander Crescenti's (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) three. Sophomore Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) had a pair of goals and four assists. Augustana, 1-0, defeated a Warrior outfit (3-2) that had won its last three games by a combined margin of 60-9.

The hosts actually took an early 1-0 lead, with Travis Rabun scoring an unassisted goal at the 8:59 mark of the first quarter. Viking junior Jesse Nagelberg (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) evened things up with a goal a minute and a half later with an assist from sophomore Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.). That started a string of six straight Augustana goals. Crescenti, who missed all but two games a year ago with a knee injury, scored with a man advantage at the 26-second mark to put the Vikings up 5-1 after one period. Davis' first goal made it 6-1 four minutes into the second quarter.

After Hendrix scored to get within four, Augustana rattled off the final three goals of the half, including another by Crescenti with the Vikings a man up.

Crescenti scored his third of the night to open the second half and junior Tim Fennelly (Littleton HS, Centennial, Colo.) scored twice in the third period as the visitors extended their lead to 14-2 by the end of the quarter. It eventually reached 17-2 on freshman Jared Hawkins' (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) second goal of the game before Warrior Patrick Rogers scored the final goal of the contest with 4:28 remaining.

Nagelberg and Gleason each scored twice to join Crescenti, Davis, Fennelly and Hawkins as multiple goal scorers for Augustana. Junior Vincent Giglierano (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) added a goal and a pair of assists. In addition to his 16 saves on 18 shots faced, Burgdorff gathered a team-high seven ground balls.

Coach Kyle Hart's squad is in action next with a trip to Albion, Michigan on Saturday, March 1 to face a Briton team that defeated Midwest Lacrosse Conference kingpin Aurora 11-9 on February 22.
