Piedmont Women's Lacrosse Outworks Aurora 21-5 at Home

Piedmont's Megan McDowell went a perfect 5-5 today shooting on goal, leading the Lady Lions to a 21-5 victory over Aurora University.
Box Score Demorest, GA  Piedmont's Women's Lacrosse team took a healthy lead early and held it, defeating the Spartans of Aurora 21-5. Megan McDowell and Mckynsey Douglas led the scoring with five and four goals respectively in the win.

The Lady Lions took to the field on the windiest day of the year so far against Aurora University from just outside Chicago, Illinois – ironically known as the windy city. Piedmont made it to the scoreboard first in today's match with a trio of great goals. Alexis Narducci led the way followed by free position goals by Maggie McDaniel and Kayla Jones.

The tough Spartans made their mark with back-to-back goals ten minutes into play to bring the Lions lead within one, 3-2. It took less than a minute though for Samantha Vanover to score on a Jenine Brideau assist.

In the next few minutes, the Lady Lions improved their lead with some solid passing that led to goals by Douglas, McDowell, and Brideau and a 7-2 lead. The Spartans made a few offensive pushes but the Piedmont defense was ready with Tiffany Slaughter and Samantha Vanover both causing turnovers to get the ball back.

In the latter part of the first half, Piedmont did what they do most well, score. Freshman Jenna Smith had two great goals around a Megan McDowell goal. Cahner Manns assisted McDowell's goal and the next goal by Douglas as well to get some points on the box score. The final goal of the first half and the 12-2 lead came from Jenine Brideau with the assist courtesy of McDaniel.

Aurora earned two more notches on the box score in the start of the second half to stop the running clock. McDowell and Douglas though were hitting the mark on every shot and scored a goal apiece quickly. At 23:02 remaining, Douglas assisted a powerplay goal by Manns and Smith found goal number three on a Jones assist two minutes later.

While Aurora would score their fifth and final goal at 14:27 left, it came after Megan McDowell's final two goals of the day. The sophomore had a perfect record shooting today, going 5-5. In the last few minutes of play, the Lady Lions held a hardy offensive and kept the Spartans in their half.

Julianna Surgent and Mckynsey Douglas grabbed two scores on Cahner Mann assists – Mann had a goal, 4 assists, and 4 draw controls in the match. The final goal belonged to freshman Marisa Register. Fellow freshman Morgan McCalla served her up a great assist after a turnover in the attacking third to set the score in stone at 21-5.

The victory moves the Lady Lions to 7-1 after defeating non-conference opponent Aurora University at home today. Women's Lacrosse will take a quick break from competition until March 15th and 16th when they head to North Carolina for a pair of games at USA South Conference opponents Meredith College and North Carolina Wesleyan College. Both games are scheduled for 12:00 PM starts.
