Opyd & Euson Power Elmhurst Past MSOE

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - Alex Opyd scored four goals and Mal Euson added three goals to lead the Elmhurst men's lacrosse team to a 12-6 victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

The Bluejays snapped a three-game skid with the win and improved to 2-3 on the season. Elmhurst also evened its Midwest Lacrosse Conference record at 1-1.

Elmhurst never trailed in the contest, scoring the first give goals of the game before pulling away in the second half to preserve the victory.

The Bluejays wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. MSOE was whistled for a penalty on the opening faceoff and Opyd ripped a shot home off a feed from Euson to convert on the man-up advantage just 55 seconds into the contest. Euson added a pair of goals in the first period and Jackson Mandli also fired home his fourth goal of the season to give Elmhurst a 4-0 cushion after the first quarter.

The Bluejays took a 5-0 lead just 1:20 into the second quarter when Matt Westhaver scored in front off a pass from Euson. MSOE answered back as the Raiders outscored the Bluejays 4-1 over the remainder of the quarter to pull to within two goals at the half. Zach Dawiec and Zach Markell scored just 1:30 apart to cut Elmhurst's lead down to 5-2. Opyed put the Bluejays back in front by four after scoring an unassisted goal with 3:45 left. MSOE's Andrew Clemens scored a paif of goals just 29 seconds apart in the final 2:10 to bring the Raiders to within two goals at halfime.

Elmhurst started quickly in the third quarter as Opyd tallied his third goal of the game off a feed from Mandli to put Elmhurst on top 7-4 with 11:49 to play. Drew Wassenaar added back-to-back goals for the Bluejays to put Elmhurst in front 9-4 after three periods.

Opyd scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season early in the fourth quarter to put Elmhurst up 10-4. Clemens scored two minutes later for MSOE, but back-to-back goals from Angelo Carbonara and Euson put the Bluejays up 12-5. Dawiec scored the game's final goal with two minutes left to make the final score 12-6 in favor of Elmhurst.

Opyd's four goals match the single-game Elmhurst record. The sophomore finished with four goals on nine shots and added two ground balls. Euson tallied five points, finishing with three goals (bringing his season total to eight) and two assists, and tying Elmhurst's single-game record for points. Wassenaar totaled three points with two goals and an assist while Mandli finished with a goal and an assist to total two points. A.J. Weiger scooped 11 ground balls while Wassenaar added five. Brandon Bethran won 14-of-22 faceoffs and totaled seven ground balls.

Clemens spared MSOE in the loss with three goals and three ground balls. Dawiec added two goals for the Raiders.

Tyler York made his first start of the season in goal and registered the win for the Bluejays. York recorded 11 saves and four ground balls in the victory.

Elmhurst outshot MSOE (0-4, 0-3 MLC) 43-27 and recorded 46 ground balls to MSOE's 28. The Bluejays were successful on 13-of-17 clearing attempts while MSOE completed just 7-of-13 clearing chances.

Elmhurst travels to Hendrix College on March 25.
