Box Score
GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team had three players score two goals each during Saturday's 11-5 win over the visiting College of Mount Saint Joseph Lions. The Lords built a big first-half lead and produced a victory that moved their season-starting record to 2-0 for the first time since 2000.
For most of the game, the Lords played a slow, deliberate offense that saw a lot of passing and selective shooting. Junior
Nick Lenard and senior
Caleb Florence rang up the first two goals of the game and pushed Kenyon ahead 2-0 after one quarter of play. Lenard's goal, his third this season, was unassisted, while Florence's was set up by senior classmate
Zach Arlia.
In the second quarter, the Lords kept pouring it on with goals from
Phil Alimam,
Alex Lopez,
Pat Kim,
Fritz Waine, and Arlia. Mount Saint Joseph's Ryan Gallagher, who provided almost all of the Lions' offense, scored one even-strength and one man-up goal in the quarter. That closed out the half with Kenyon in front by a 7-2 count.
Things got a little hairy for the Lords in the third quarter and fourth quarter, as Mount Saint Joseph carried momentum through the break. The Lions (0-3) were aided by several Kenyon penalties, two of which resulted in goals from Drew Stoffer and Gallagher. The surge pushed the Lions within two goals (7-5) with 7:51 remaining in the game. Overall, Kenyon was flagged five times in the game and yielded three man-up goals to the Lions.
With a good chunk of their lead now removed, the Lords played out the rest of the game with a sense of urgency. Another Florence goal at the 5:32 mark of the fourth quarter sparked a game-closing 4-0 run for the Lords.
Trey Trudell, Alimam, and Lopez also found the Lions' net in Kenyon's final flurry.
That left Florence, Alimam, and Lopez with two goals each. Lenard and Waine both had three-point games with a goal and two assists, while Arlia, Kim, and freshman
Andrew Weinert all tallied up two-point games.
In goal, Kenyon sophomore
Patrick Shevelson saw 34 Mount Saint Joseph shots. Eighteen of the shots were on goal and Shevelson saved 13 of them. At the other end of the field, Kenyon unleashed 43 shots with Lions' goalkeeper Mike Weil making 15 stops.
Kenyon will be in action next at Sewanee. That game is scheduled for Sunday, March 2 with a 1 p.m. start.
