Box Score The Aurora University men's lacrosse team won their third straight Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC) contest Wednesday afternoon in Cincinnati, Ohio at Mount St. Joseph, 12-3.
AU dominated the contest from the opening whistle though the host Lions did show some early life.
After Mt. St. Joseph won the opening face-off vs Spartan junior
Max Obriecht, Obriecht would win eight consecutive and 12 of his next 14 face-offs in a dominating performance.
With Obriecht controlling possession for the Spartans, the AU offense took advantage of the Lions. Junior Jordan Wlliams got AU on the board first with a goal at 12:06 and an assist from
Danny Loyall.
After MSJ tied the game at 1-1, AU senior
Jack Barry gave the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish. He was assisted by
Alex Gebben on the play. Minutes later, Barry assisted
Chase Peterson for a 3-1 Spartan lead that held up at the end of the first period.
MSJ cut the lead back to one, 3-2 early in the second period as Ryan Gallagher beat AU goalkeeper
Adam Holka. Holka and the AU defense stiffened up from here on, only allowing one more Lion goal for the final 42 minutes of play. Holka finished the day with seven saves.
As the Spartan defense tightened the reigns on the Lions, the offense exploded, tallying six straight goals in the second and third periods. AU took a 7-2 lead into halftime and then led 9-2 at the end of three periods. Scoring in the 6-0 run were Barry (Obriecht assist),
Pat Diorka (Obriecht), Williams scored the next two with assists from Loyall and
Nolan Miller,
Bailey Smith (Obriecht) and
Zach Henry (unassisted).
A man-up goal by MSJ, their second of the game, snapped the AU run and made the score 9-3 with 11:22 to play in the game.
AU responded for three unanswered goals in the fourth period to collect the win. Henry (unassisted),
Casey Pettine (Williams assist) and
Zachary Olsen (unassisted) scored the AU goals.
AU finished two for three in man-up situations while MSJ was two for four.
The win improved the Spartans to 3-3 overall and 3-0 in the MLC. Next action for the Spartan men's lacrosse team comes on Friday,
March 28 when they host Adams State University. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. on Vago Field in Aurora, Ill.
