MLC Report (Week 1) - Carthage Opens Season with Win Over Calvin

WAUKESHA, WI - The Carthage men's lacrosse team kicked off the 2014 season with a pair of contests in Detroit.  The Red Men opened the campaign with a dominant 23-1 win over Calvin and closed the double header with a narrow 15-12 setback against Albion.

Offensively, junior attacker Timothy Francis (Costa Mesa, Calif./Huntington Beach) led the Red Men to the season opening split. The junior scored 10 goals and added an assist during the opening weekend of play. 

Francis netted six goals in the loss to Albion, marking the second-best all-time mark in Carthage history. The Costa Mesa, California native added four more goals against Calvin and currently leads all of NCAA Division III with 10 goals this season.

Junior midfielder Remy Giacotto (Elmwood Park, Ill./Oak Park-Fenwick) anchored the Red Men defensive effort. The junior finished the week with 15 ground balls and was a combined 30-of-42 on face-offs for a 71% percentage. 

Carthage (1-1, 0-0 MLC) will return to action on Sunday at Centre.

In other action...

Concordia University (0-1, 0-0 MLC) dropped a tough 9-7 decision at John Carroll Saturday afternoon.  The Falcons offense was paced by senior midfielder Danny Dahms (Calgary, Alberta/Dr. EP Scarlett) in the loss.  Dahms scored four goals, including two man-up goals, to go along with a ground ball and a caused turnover. It was his 12th career game with three or more goals.

Fontbonne University dropped a pair of contests to open the 2014 season.  The Griffins (0-2, 0-0 MLC) fell at Millsaps 18-5 over the weekend and dropped a narrow 9-8 decision to Rockhurst in St. Louis Tuesday evening. Freshman Brendan Friss (Mooresville, NC/H.S.) leads the squad with five goals and an assist during the first two contests.
