MLC Report (Week 2) - Hanover Nets Comeback Win Over Shenandoah

WAUKESHA, WI - Hanover College opened the season with a comeback road win over Shenandoah University (VA) Monday, earning a 9-8 victory.  Junior attacker Josh Green (Beaumaris, Australia) scored with 1:15 remaining to lift Hanover to the win.

Junior attacker Nick Hermes (Grayslake, Ill./H.S.) led Hanover's offense with five goals, while Green finished the outing with three. Junior midfielder Zac Cheatle (Fox River Grove, Ill./Cary Grove) also hit the back of the net for the Panthers (1-0, 0-0 MLC).

Shenandoah (2-1) built a 6-3 lead with fewer than five minutes to play in the second quarter.

Green scored his second goal with 1:45 left before the half. The goal triggered a string of four straight by Hanover.

Hanover fired 30 shots in the outing, with Green leading the charge with 11 shots and Hermes adding seven.

Junior goaltender Addison Sears (Louisville, Ky./Dupont Manual) posted nine saves to key the Panthers' defense.

Hanover will travel to Bethany (WV) for a 3:00 PM start this afternoon and will return home to face Centre at 12:00 PM Saturday.

In other action...

Carthage College (2-1, 0-0 MLC) earned a 12-10 road win over Centre College Sunday. Freshman goalie Ryan Smith (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) had 15 saves and 10 goals against for a 60% save percentage in the win, becoming the first visiting goalie to pick up a win at Centre since the 2011 season. The Colonels offense ranked sixth in scoring offense nationally last spring.

Fontbonne University earned its first win, posting a 13-4 win over Dubuque Sunday.  The Griffins (1-2, 0-0 MLC) received four goals and seven ground balls from freshman attacker Brendan Friss (Mooresville, NC/H.S.) in the win.

Benedictine (1-0, 0-0 MLC) opened the season with a dominating 14-2 win over Calvin.  Sophomore attacker Blake Keenan (Schaumburg, Ill./H.S.) scored four times and added two assists to lead the offense.  Sophomore goalie Jeffrey Smitheram (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park) made 17 saves in the win, including seven in the fourth quarter.
