Silva, Smith, Begner Earn MLC Weekly Awards

MINNEAPOLIS— The University of Dubuque's Giovanni Silva and North Central University's Jackson Smith both received Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC) offensive player of the week recognition, while Cornell's Evan Begner was named the defensive player of the week, for events April 4-10 as selected by the league's head coaches. 

Silva (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) had one assist and six goals on only eight shots in the 16-4 win against Lake Forest Saturday. He is tied for fourth among all MLC competitors in league action in goals with six, and tied for seventh in points with seven.

Smith (Chanhassen, Minn.) had two goals and one assist in the loss to Monmouth Saturday. He leads his team with four points on the season and is tied for first with three goals.

Begner (Evergreen, Colo.) had 22 saves on the 24 shots he faced in goal on the week for a .917 save percentage. He leads the MLC in saves and save percentage.

This is the second career MLC honor for Silva and Begner, and first for Smith.

The 2022 season marks the first year of competition in the MLC for North Central.

The MLC is comprised of NCAA Division III institutions located throughout the Midwest including Cornell (Mt. Vernon, Iowa), Dubuque (Dubuque, Iowa), Lake Forest (Lake Forest, Ill.), Monmouth (Monmouth, Ill.), North Central (Minneapolis, Minn.), Northland (Ashland, Wis.), and Northwestern (St. Paul, Minn.).
