MWLC Report (Week 1) - Vikings Beat Sewanee & Oglethorpe to Open Season

WAUKESHA, WI - The Augustana women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2014 season with a pair of wins.  The Vikings opened the campaign with a 16-13 win at Sewanee and closed the week with a dominating 21-1 victory at Oglethorpe.

Offensively, junior attacker Hilary Kargl (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) led the Vikings during the two wins. The junior scored 10 goals, added seven assists, and scooped up four ground balls during the week of play. 

Kargl scored six goals with two assists in a 16-13 win at Sewanee and added four goals and five assists in a 21-1 win over Oglethorpe Sunday. 

For the week, Kargl averaged 5.0 goals and 3.5 assists per game, while leading the Vikings with a 76% shot on goal percentage.

Sophomore midfielder Kaylee Nolan (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) boasted a team-high five draw controls, caused two turnovers, and picked up six ground balls to lead the defense. 

Augustana (2-0, 0-0 MWLC) will travel to Centre for a 6:00 PM start this evening.

In other action...

Beloit College (1-0, 0-0 MWLC) opened the season with a 21-7 win over Wilmington Tuesday.  The Buccaneers received seven goals and three assists from sophomore Sara Fithian (Plantation, Fla./South Plantation) and five goals and four assists from freshman Hannah Drexler (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) in the win.

Carthage College earned a split during its opening weekend of play.  The Lady Reds (1-1, 0-0 MWLC) beat Hendrix 22-2 on Saturday prior to a 16-7 loss at Sewanee on Sunday afternoon.  Senior midfielder Lauren Chatham (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) scored five goals with two assists against Hendrix and added three goals with one assist in the loss to Sewanee.
