The Aurora University men's lacrosse team, making a second
consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse
Championships, defeated the Adrian College Bulldogs 22-13 to
advance to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second season in a row.
AU jumped on the Bulldogs early with Max Obriecht
scoring the first of his five goals and six assists on the day just
five seconds into the game.
After Adrian tied the game 1-1, AU rolled off six straight goals
to take a commanding lead. Goal scorers in the run were Jack
Barry (three), Zachary Olsen (two) and Nolan
Miller.
Adrian would score three times before the quarter ended but AU led
7-4 after one.
The home team continued to cut into the lead, scoring the first
goal of the second quarter but Obriecht scored to end the streak
with 1:39 left in the half.
At halftime, AU led 8-5.
The third quarter started just as the first quarter did, with the
Spartans coming out firing. Four goals later AU led 12-5 with 6:46
to play. Goal scorers were Barry, Miller, Obreicht and Jason
Koziol.
As they did earlier in the game, Adrian did not go away quietly,
scoring three times before Olsen tallied his third of the game with
19 seconds left in the third. At the end of three, AU led 13-8.
The fourth quarter was a offensive showcase with the Spartans
scoring nine times and Adrian adding five for the final 22-13
score.
In the fourth, Head Coach Kylor Berkman was able to get
all Spartans in the game as Olsen, Justin Bose (two),
Miller (two), Obriecht (two), Danny Loyall and Max
Matthai scored goals.
On the day, Adam Holka finished with nine saves for the
win, Obreicht had 11 points (five goals and six assists), Barry,
Olsen and Miller had four goals each with Miller adding two
assists, Koziol had a goal and two assists and Alex
Gebben had one assist. Obriecht, Matt Smidlein and
Jeremy Kartel combined to go 30-of-39 in face-offs,
dominating the Bulldogs
With the win, AU is now 16-3 overall, having won 16 straight games
and tying a school record for wins. Au will travel to Denison
University on Saturday, May 10 in Granville, Ohio. Game time is to
be determined.
