Augsburg University's Helena Nguyen and Christina Nelson have been named the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference offensive and defensive players of the week for events of March 19-25, as selected by the league's sports information directors.
Nguyen (Maple Grove, Minn.) had a record-setting week as the Auggies went 3-0. On Wednesday, the senior attacker had a goal and assist in the Auggies' 17-4 win over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul. On Saturday, she set a new single-game school record with eight points, tying a single-game school record with seven goals, in Augsburg's 16-3 win over Cornell College. She added three ground balls and two caused turnovers in the win. Then Sunday, she had five goals and an assist, adding a ground ball, in the Auggies' 17-7 win over Beloit College.
Nelson (Bloomington, Minn.) had a strong all-around week for Augsburg as she recorded 30 draw controls on the week -- eight in the win over Northwestern-St. Paul Wednesday, 11 in the win over Cornell Saturday, and 11 in Sunday's win over Beloit. She also recorded a team-high 13 ground balls and a team-high-tying 10 caused turnovers during the week. The 11 draw controls are tied for the third-most in a single game in program history.
