Deer, Althoff, Smith Earn MWLC Weekly Awards

MINNEAPOLIS— Cornell College's Nina Deer received Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) offensive player of the week recognition, while Cornell's Maddie Althoff and the University of Northwestern's Cara Smith both received league defensive players of the week, for events March 21-27, as selected by the league's sports information directors.

Deer (Highland Park, Ill.) established Cornell's single-game records for points (11) and assists (6) on her Senior Day in the 18-3 victory over Marian. She scored just 50 seconds into the contest and finished with six goals on seven shots. Deer netted three of those goals in the opening quarter to help the Rams to an early 9-0 lead.

Althoff (Stillwater, Minn.) played all 60 minutes in net for the Rams' 18-3 Senior Day win over Marian. She held the visitors scoreless in the first and fourth quarters and finished with seven saves. 

Smith (Watertown, Wis.) had four caused turnovers, six ground balls, and four draw controls to lead the Eagles' defensive effort in the 14-11 victory over William Penn on Saturday. She also scored twice and had an assist on the other side of the field.

This is the second MWLC weekly honor for Deer and Smith this season, as Deer was selected in week two and Smith repeats as the honoree. This marks the first career honor for Althoff.

The MWLC is comprised of NCAA Division III institutions located throughout the Midwest including Augsburg (Minneapolis), Cornell (Mt. Vernon, Iowa), Hamline (St. Paul, Minn.), Lake Forest (Lake Forest, Ill.), Monmouth (Monmouth, Ill.), Northwestern (St. Paul, Minn.), and Wartburg (Waverly, Iowa).
